River Dolphins

River dolphins in Peru have been studied for several years in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, Iquitos, but relatively little is known about river dolphin occurrence in non-reserve areas. Threats to these dolphins outside protected areas include habitat loss, fisheries interactions and exploitation for medicinal purposes.

The ProDelphinus River Dolphin Project documents habitat use of the two species, Boto, Inia geoffrensis and Tucuxi, Sotalia fluviatilis, as well as tests new methodologies to advance research and conservation of these species in the Peruvian Amazon.
